Sophie's first haircut & swim

Sophie had her first haircut ... or rather shave on Tuesday (27 Aug). We figured that with the cradle cap, we might as well shave off her hair to give her scalp more breathing space. So it was off to Baby Spa at Plaza Singapura.

Initially she was none the wiser and sat there patiently while the mummy started singing to distract her.

Slowly but surely she realized that something was amiss literally..her hair!

Later it was off to her first swim. See she's got a pink float around her neck.

She's quite a natural at it and really enjoyed herself thoroughly. She got herself quite an audience when she was swimming. Think she was showing off too. Haha

Sophie's new trick

Sophie has learnt a new trick yesterday- sucking her fist!

We noticed that she has a tendency to suck and will sometimes suck my shoulder or arm when I carry her so we decided offered her the pacifier. After all, I don't think a sweaty shoulder or arm taste very nice. She didn't take to it at first and so we "help" her suck her fist but bringing it to her mouth. But since she didn't have control over her hands, we'll sometimes alternate between her fist and pacifier to get her sucking motion going. So that's how the pacifier slowly worked .

Yesterday, I realised she was able to aim her fist at her mouth and was sucking very hard on it and she seemed to be enjoying it very much. She started with right fist and now can suck on the left one too.
Last night when she woke up in her cot in the middle of the night, I could hear her happily sucking on her fist. It's certainly a very funny sight that you can witness from the video and I'm glad she dun have to rely on us to pop the pacifier in for her anymore and can self soothe herself back to sleep now. Yet another milestone for Sophie.

Week 10

Recently Sophie has been charming everyone with her smiles. Occassionally she'll break into laughter when we sing or make silly sounds at her. I think the little one is very entertained that she's got all these adults wrapped around her little finger.

Sophie and her ipod!

We've got quite a few things around the house to keep her up during her activity time. One of them is her play mat. It has toys that dangle above her so that she can look at them and slowly encourage her to reach out to touch them with her hands. So far, this has not happened yet. But I noticed that she likes 2 of the toys, one is a bunny that I call Mr Rabbit and the other... I call it a red heart that squeaks when you press it.

So everyday I lay her down on the mat and play with her. Sometimes she gets her tummy time on it too. But I think she's not a fan of tummy time as she looks so uncomfortable there. Nevertheless, it's good for training her to lift her head.

The little one has also started to babble back at you when we talk to her. Her Ohhs and Ahhs are still random but I like to think that she wants to be included in our conversations... I wonder what will be her first word. Will it be Mama or Papa?

Baby Routine

Before Sophie was born, we have decided that we don't want to have our lives run by our little one and concluded that having a routine will be best for everyone. So we poured through books by authors like Gina Ford, Tracy Hogg who are advocates of implementing routines for babies.

However we didn't stick to the plan the day we got home as we had a confinement nanny around. She is of the opinion that babies should sleep as much as they can as they need it for their development. But Sophie was an extremely sleepy baby who slept more than the regular baby. And also her feeding was pretty much on demand basis, though she was drinking well and her weight gain was on track.

Sophie managed to sleep thru the night by the 2nd month, waking mostly around 5,6 ish. But one bad thing was her sleep association, always had to be carried, rocked..etc. Initially we thought it could be colicky. But on hind sight, it didn'e seem to be so decided to implement a routine, hoping that it can change some of her sleep associations.

Day one of the Routine - 12/10 (Monday)
7:15- Surprise, surprise Sophie managed to wake up at 7:15 as scheduled. After taking her milk and getting her diapers changed, I kept her busy on her playmat and played music for her on her new toy.
8:30- Put to sleep on her cot
10:00- Baby up by 10:05 and drank her milk, followed by a bath at 1035
11:15- Drank milk and slept again at 11:25
2:00- Long nap of almost one and half hours and woke up to drink milk, followed by play time
3:00 - Getting sleepy and slept at 3:30. But up after 15 mins
4:25- Feeding time then went for a stroll
6:05- Started to get fussy so fed put down to sleep at 6:35. Then the sleep battle began with crying... finally slinged her to sleep at 8:45
8:50- Woke up for milk shortly with a top-up of expressed breast milk
9:30- Back to lalaland
12:35am- First attempt at a dream feed and it was a success! Sophie drank 70ml and hit the sack immediately after that.

Best thing? She lasted till 6am for milk the next day. I'm so proud of her :)

Verdict at the end of Day one?
She went down pretty okay for the day naps and only started fussing at the night. Which is very common. So all in all, not bad I would say.

Shall continue and see what happens tomorrow.

Toys Galore for baby Sophie

For 2 month old Sophie, these are the things that she'll learn to play with...
  • She kicks and waves her arms when she is excited. This uses the same movement as stepping. It is easier to lift heavy legs when lying flat.
  • She smiles directly at people and expects to be given her turn in "conversations."
  • She can learn that one event follows another.
  • She learns to make things happen.
  • She can locate a sound in front of her, but not one behind; she turns to the correct side if she hears a sound, but cannot locate it.

Today Daddy applied for half day leave to accompany Mummy to buy toys for Sophie. There was this Mattel warehouse sales and they came home with many good buys.

Laugh & Learn™ Learning Music Player™
Laugh & Learn Learning Toolbench
Little Superstar 2-in-1 Singing Band Walker
Fisher-Price Open Top Take-Along Swing

Daddy thinks that the swing is the best buy because he can leave me in here when I get fussy. $60 very well spent! Total Damage today: $190 :P

Mummy shall look out for the next sale to buy me more toys! Daddy and Mummy are the best :)

Sleeping Beauty

Mummy's nick name for me is Sleeping Beauty because I'm sleeping most of the time. Unlike other babies that likes to wake up to play, I prefer to sleep. Sleeping even beats drinking milk and I'll sometimes fall asleep half way drinking mik.

Mummy used to think it's because I'm slightly premature being born in the 37th week. But she has found out that other babies born in the 37th week can be very awake and alert. Conclusion, I think I take after my Daddy in this aspect.

I especially like to sleep when I'm out with Daddy and Mummy. Not that Mummy minds cos it leaves her with time to go shopping :) The only downside is once I realise I'm hungry, I want my milk NOW!

But recently I'm learning to be more awake because I'm growing day and day and want to explore and see more of this world that I'm born in. So let me enjoy more of my sleep first...Zzzzz

My many poses when I sleep

Mummy and her new friends

Mummy made some new friends from the Singapore Motherhood forum and she brought me out to meet her new friends and other babies born in the month of August like me on the 1st of Oct.

As usual I was fast asleep...

Mummy was quite brave since this was the first time she has gone out alone with me. All thanks to the sling that made it possible for her to be so mobile. Even Daddy has learnt how to use the sling now.

Still sleeping...Zzzz

Mummy with other fellow mummies

Mummy was the envy of other mummies as I was fast alseep and did not fuss or cry like other babies who needed to be fed, changes, walked, etc. But little did they know that I was a naughty girl later that evening when I didn't sleep in the night...Mummy hopes that I can be a good girl both outside and at home too so that I can truly be an angel baby.
